How recommendations, calculations and research are produced

Every provider fact here comes from the provider's own published pages or terms, recorded with the date we checked it. Calculations follow published schedules exactly, and anything we could not confirm is shown as unknown, never as zero.

Provider facts come from the provider's own sources

We use each provider's official pages, help articles and terms, and written confirmation from the provider when we have it. Every fact points to a source record with its address, publisher, what it supports, the date we checked it and any conflict with another source. The check date appears beside the fact wherever it is shown.

We do not use third-party reviews, forum posts or competitors' comparison pages as evidence of a provider's fees or rules. When one provider describes another, we treat that as a claim. When a provider's own sources disagree, we show both and do not quietly pick one.

A claim, a document, an assumption and an outcome are different things

A provider's claim
What a provider says about itself, such as a fee or a screening step. We report it with its source and date. It is not independent verification.
An inspected document
A record someone has actually examined, such as a profit and loss statement or a payout report. We do not inspect documents for readers.
Your assumption
A number you enter or choose, such as a sale price. Anything calculated from it is a scenario.
An observed outcome
Something that actually happened, such as a completed sale at a known price. We have no observed outcomes for the providers here, and we never present an asking price as a sale price.

Every recommendation runs through the Deal Decision Check

The same five steps sit behind every comparison and, later, every tool on the site. Each finding gets one of five plain statuses, so you can see why an option fits or does not, and what would change the answer.

The five steps

  1. State the requirement

Write down what you need in plain terms: your role, the business model, its size and the constraint that matters most.

  2. Identify the applicable evidence

Find the published rule, document or figure that speaks to that requirement, with its source and the date it was checked.

  3. Apply a transparent rule or calculation

Compare the requirement with the evidence using a rule or calculation anyone can repeat.

  4. Explain the result

Give the finding a plain status and say why, including what the evidence does not cover.

  5. Name the next step

Point to the action that settles or acts on the finding: a page to confirm, a question to ask, a record to gather.

The five statuses

Supported by the stated evidence
The cited evidence supports the finding. It is only as current as its check date.
Does not fit
The evidence shows the option does not meet the stated requirement.
Unresolved
The evidence needed is not published or could not be confirmed. Treated as unknown, never as zero or a pass.
Conflicting
Sources disagree. Both are shown, with which one governs if that is known.
Not applicable
The check does not apply to this requirement or option.

Worked example: Empire Flippers

Fictional example
Requirement
Sell a content site through a full broker. Net profit has averaged $1,500 a month over the last 12 months.
Evidence
Empire Flippers' published listing requirements ask for $2,000 a month in average net profit over 12 months.Checked Source S3
Rule
Compare the 12-month average profit with the published screen: $1,500 is below $2,000.
Status
Does not fit
Result
This broker's published screen is not met, so this route does not fit yet. The finding says nothing about the site's quality or value.
Next step
Look at routes without a published profit screen, such as Acquire.com or Flippa, or keep building until the 12-month average meets the screen.

Worked example: Flippa

Fictional example
Requirement
Know what Flippa would charge to sell a $60,000 website.
Evidence
Flippa's pricing page shows seller packages, but their prices could not be mapped reliably to package names when we checked.Checked Source S8
Rule
Match the sale to a package and its published fees.
Status
Unresolved
Result
The fee is unknown. It is not zero, and it is not treated as lower or higher than any other provider's fee.
Next step
Confirm current pricing on Flippa's pricing page before comparing it with another route.

Fit and order ignore who pays us

  • Providers are listed alphabetically.
  • Fit is judged only against published evidence: the services offered, the business types supported, eligibility screens and what you still have to do yourself.
  • Whether a provider pays us is not an input. A provider that pays nothing stays visible when it fits.
  • Unknown facts are shown as unknown. They never make an option look cheaper or simpler.

Which providers may pay us, and our current status with each, is on the affiliate disclosure.

Fee calculations follow the published schedule to the cent

The fee example uses Empire Flippers' standard published schedule: the greater of $10,000 or 15% of the first $700,000, plus 8% of the next $4,300,000, plus 2.5% above $5,000,000. It applies to the business sale price, excluding separately priced inventory.

  • All arithmetic is done in whole cents. Each band's share is added up exactly, then rounded half up to the cent once.
  • Rates are stored as basis points (1% is 100 basis points), so no rounding error creeps in.
  • The result assumes an all-cash sale that completes, with no separately priced inventory, and comes before debt, tax and other transaction costs.
  • A quoted or signed agreement with the provider overrides the published schedule.
  • The calculation runs in your browser. The price you enter is never sent to us or to analytics.

Automated tests check the engine against the published examples ($50,000 → $10,000; $100,000 → $15,000; $1,000,000 → $129,000), the band boundaries, the $10,000 minimum, and zero or invalid prices.

Other providers' fee rules are recorded below. A rule is calculated only once it is fully published and covered by tests; until then the result is reported as unknown.

What we have not verified

  • Listing figures. We do not check any seller's revenue, profit or traffic.
  • How sales turn out. We have not bought or sold a business through these providers.
  • Fees that are not fully published: Flippa's seller packages, FE International's advisory fees, and what buyers pay to access Empire Flippers and FE International listings.
  • Which Acquire.com tier a price of exactly $250,000 falls in, since its own pages word the boundary differently.
  • Whether Acquire.com pays any referral reward for buyers.
