Flippa Fees: What to Confirm Before You Pay
By Graham Ashler · Last checked October 2026
Founder & Editor · Deal Field Guide
Flippa fees include an upfront listing or brokerage package and a success fee when a sale completes. The package depends on the asset, price and service route; payment costs can be separate. Flippa advertises an entry package from $29, but that figure is not the total cost of selling your business.
I would not choose a selling route from a “starts at” price. I would ask what you pay if nothing sells, what you pay if the deal closes, and what work the package actually removes from your week.
What we can and cannot settle here: the fee components, current published refund rules and the method for checking a quote are clear. We could not reliably match every dynamic seller package to every price band in the public pricing page. We will not turn that uncertainty into a made-up universal fee table.
Flippa fees: get these five costs onto one page
A useful quote separates money due before the sale from money due because of the sale. It also says who pays transaction costs. A seller listing fee and a buyer payment fee do not belong in the same column.
| Cost | What the official sources establish | What your quote needs to say |
|---|---|---|
| Listing or brokerage package | Upfront charge; package availability and price depend on asset and asking/reserve price | Exact package, price, service route and term |
| Success fee | Mandatory on a qualifying completed sale; rate depends on final sale value and broker assistance | Exact rate, full fee base and payment timing |
| Optional services or upgrades | Packages differ in reach, confidentiality and assistance | Which are included; which cost extra |
| Payment or escrow service | FlippaPay and Escrow.com routes have transaction costs | Selected service, exact quote, payer and currency |
| Outside professionals | Not established as included merely by buying a package | Your legal, accounting, diligence and other separate bills |
Evidence: Provider published terms (checked October 24, 2026). Flippa pricing, pricing and payment help, and terms, section 12. Outside professional costs depend on the work you choose and the quotes you receive.
The live pricing page advertises an entry package from $29 and a starting success-fee figure. Its seller interface contains multiple price bands, package cards and brokerage options. Those fragments are not enough to establish your combined price. Do not add the lowest package figure to the lowest advertised percentage and call that a quote.
The written quote record
Copy this record into your deal notes. If a necessary field has no answer, leave it unknown rather than entering zero.
| Question | Record the answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What exact asset is being sold? | Store, content site, SaaS, app, FBA brand, domain or other specified asset | Packages can depend on asset type |
| What asking or reserve price sets the package? | USD amount and the selected band | Avoid applying another listing's package |
| What final sale value sets the success rate? | Confirm exact rate and any boundary rule | Negotiation can change the final bill |
| What counts in transaction value? | Cash, inventory, notes, earnouts, shares, taxes or other amounts as applicable | The percentage is meaningless without its base |
| What is the upfront charge? | Amount, due date, listing term and renewal/relisting terms | This can be paid before any buyer exists |
| What service route is included? | Self-service, broker-led or another named offer | Compare responsibility alongside price |
| Which upgrades are included? | Confidentiality, documents, promotion and transfer help | Avoid counting a paid extra as standard |
| Which payment provider will be used? | Service and current transaction quote | Payment cost can differ from the advertised minimum |
| Who pays each payment cost? | Buyer, seller or split | Keep the seller proceeds calculation honest |
| How is deferred consideration charged? | Written fee base and due dates | Do not assume fee timing follows collections |
| What refunds can be requested? | Applicable policy, dates and conditions | No sale is not itself a blanket refund promise |
| What is outside the quote? | Professional fees, tax, debt, transfer and currency costs | Unknown costs remain visible |
If you can fill those rows, Flippa's price is no longer vague. You can compare it with another route using the same deal structure.
Once you know your asset, likely price and how much help you want, use Flippa's pricing page to select that route and confirm the total. Keep a copy of the terms you accept.
Check Flippa's package and success fee for your sale
Calculate the whole bill, not just the percentage
Use the success fee's confirmed base, then add the package and seller-paid extras. A listed asking price is not proof of sale proceeds, and a guessed rate is not a budget.
Total seller cost = upfront package + success fee + seller-paid transaction costs + outside professional costs
Net sale proceeds = actual consideration received − seller costs − other agreed adjustments
For deferred deals, calculate the first cash receipt separately from possible later receipts. A seller note is money owed under a payment agreement; an earnout is a payment dependent on future conditions. Neither belongs in “cash received today.”
Three fictional quotes show the arithmetic
These are teaching examples using User assumptions, not current Flippa offers, package prices or fee tiers. They show how to calculate once you have a written quote. Do not use their assumed rates to estimate your listing.
| Fictional case, USD | Assumed success-fee calculation | Assumed upfront package | Assumed seller-paid other costs | Illustrative net after these costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 all-cash consideration | 10% × $20,000 = $2,000 | $50 | $500 | $17,450 |
| $100,000 all-cash consideration | 7.5% × $100,000 = $7,500 | $400 | $1,500 | $90,600 |
| $750,000 all-cash consideration | 6% × $750,000 = $45,000 | $1,300 | $8,000 | $695,700 |
Taxes, debt payoffs and unlisted adjustments are excluded from these fictional nets. No rate here implies acceptance or a completed sale.
For the $100,000 example, $100,000 − $7,500 − $400 − $1,500 = $90,600. The assumed success fee is 7.5%, but the stated total cost is $9,400, or 9.4% of the consideration. Quoting only the percentage would hide $1,900.
If that sale never completes, the success fee under this assumed example is not triggered, but the upfront package and any professional work already bought can still have cost money. Refund eligibility is a separate question.
Whole-price rates are not marginal bands
Flippa's terms describe a success fee calculated as a percentage of total transaction value or final sale price, including applicable taxes. They do not establish Empire Flippers' blended marginal formula as Flippa's rule. Provider published terms (checked October 24, 2026).
If your quote says 8% of a $200,000 fee base, that is $16,000. Do not apply 8% only to the amount above a threshold unless the actual agreement says to. And do not assume inventory is excluded because another provider excludes it.
The terms' wording about applicable taxes also means a simple pre-tax sale-price illustration may not equal your invoice. Ask what is in your quoted fee base and what tax is charged on the service itself. Those are different tax questions.
Refund rules deserve a proper reading
Listing fees apply whether or not an asset sells, but “always nonrefundable” is not an accurate summary of the current published terms. Flippa describes several circumstances in which a refund may be requested.
Under section 12.1 of the terms, checked October 24, 2026, those include taking down a listing before it goes live, taking it down within seven days of going live, and a buyer-interest provision where no qualified buyer contact is received within 30 days. Provider published terms (dated).
Qualified contact is broader than receiving an offer. The terms include specified buyer messages, signed nondisclosure agreements, proof-of-funds information or scheduled meetings. An NDA is a confidentiality agreement. If a buyer signs one and then disappears, that may still matter to the policy's definition of contact.
After the stated early window, the terms limit listing-fee refunds except for the described guarantee and applicable legal rights. Read the policy and your package together; this page does not promise that your request will be approved.
| Your concern | What to check before relying on a refund |
|---|---|
| “I changed my mind” | Whether the listing is still within a stated cancellation/refund window |
| “I got no offers” | Whether qualified contact occurred even without an offer |
| “Nobody contacted me” | The dates and records relevant to the 30-day provision |
| “A buyer did not complete” | Success-fee and dispute terms; do not assume the listing fee is refunded |
| “I bought a broker package” | That package's engagement and refund terms alongside the general terms |
The practical move is to record the live date, payment receipt and any buyer contact. A vague recollection of “no interest” is less useful than a dated record.
Buyer access and payment charges are separate from seller commission
Flippa's current pricing page shows a free buyer account and Premium at $49/month or $490/year. It advertises early access to new listings and faster NDA access as Premium benefits. These are provider descriptions, not our independent verification of listing quality. Provider published terms (checked October 24, 2026).
A buyer membership does not pay the purchase price, fund working capital or replace due diligence. Nor should its cost be deducted from the seller's proceeds unless the parties have specifically agreed that allocation.
Payment pricing has a source conflict
The current pricing page advertises FlippaPay from 1% and Escrow.com from 1.2%. An older Flippa help article describes FlippaPay from 0.5% for qualifying transactions and a different escrow table. Provider published terms (checked October 24, 2026); conflicting published figures.
We do not select the lower number and tell you that is the cost. The exact transaction quote, service, location, funding method, currency and allocation need checking. A “from” rate is a starting point, not your invoice.
The same help article describes card authorizations for buyer verification. A temporary hold is not the same as a fee, but it can affect available card funds. Check the current authorization prompt before making an offer rather than relying on an old help-page amount.
A lower package price can buy you more work
The cost comparison needs a responsibility comparison. Self-service and broker-led routes do not give the seller the same workload, so a fee difference alone cannot identify the better fit.
In a self-managed process, budget time for listing preparation, buyer questions, access control, negotiation, document coordination and transfer. If you choose a broker package, ask which of those jobs the engagement actually includes and which remain yours. A vague promise of support is not a task list.
Field Notes: visibility is not sale readiness
Operator experience: the publisher has run content and affiliate sites, Amazon FBA products, KDP publishing, SaaS, iOS apps and YouTube. He has not worked as a broker or sold through these marketplaces. Store-specific observations outside that scope are research-based.
A listing can make the revenue clear while leaving the labor unclear. The hard questions are often small and repetitive: who updates the affiliate offers, handles a payout issue, checks a stock order, fixes a broken integration or answers an urgent support ticket?
My opinion is that paid exposure is a weak fix for an unclear business. More people reading an unconvincing profit figure does not make it convincing. Before buying another promotional upgrade, reconcile earnings and document the work a new owner must inherit.
AI can make a listing read smoothly and produce a tidy process document. It cannot turn an unsupported add-back into profit or make an account transferable. Treat polish as presentation; ask for evidence underneath it.
Finish the Deal Decision Check
A good outcome from this page can be “get the missing quote.” That is a useful resolution when the alternative is paying on an invented price.
| Requirement | Evidence and rule | Finding | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Know the total seller cost | Need package, exact success rate/base and seller-paid extras | Unresolved until quoted | Complete the written quote record |
| Treat the $29 entry figure as the whole selling cost | Official sources describe a separate success fee | Does not fit | Add all applicable charges |
| Assume no sale guarantees a refund | Current policy has defined conditions | Does not fit | Check the actual dates and conditions |
| Know final payment cost from an old 0.5% help figure | Current pricing shows a different starting rate | Conflicting | Request the transaction-specific quote |
| Compare self-service with full brokerage on fee alone | Responsibilities differ | Does not fit | Compare the work included |
Do not try to avoid a success fee by taking a platform-introduced buyer elsewhere. Flippa's terms, section 11 address circumvention and describe buyer liability if Flippa cannot recover the success fee from the seller. Provider published terms (checked October 24, 2026). Get your obligations clear before proceeding.
If you need to choose between provider models, start with the marketplace comparison. It separates the route decision from a claim that one advertised rate is universally cheapest.
How this page was researched
Deal Field Guide helps you buy or sell an online business with clear eyes — comparing the real routes, showing the money after fees, and telling you what owning each kind of business is actually like, with the source behind every number.
Research note: we read the official pricing page, its seller package content, payment help and terms on October 24, 2026. Public extraction did not reliably preserve every seller band-to-package association; those figures remain unquoted. We did not obtain a personalized quote, test checkout or complete a sale. The fictional examples are arithmetic demonstrations. Software, including AI, may help organize research and drafting; the publisher remains responsible. See our methodology and affiliate disclosure. No provider referral link was active at this check.
